“It has been an absolute pleasure to watch Yianni grow into the role of Project Manager. A transition that has been seamless due to his strong work ethic and dedication to his projects.

Through his considered approach, honest and collaborative management style, Yianni has earnt a great deal of respect from his colleagues, clients, consultants, and subcontractors alike.

Yianni has established himself as an emerging leader within Newpol and I look forward to witnessing his continued success within our organisation, and the industry more broadly.”

- Alastair Grant, Director.

We sat down with Yianni to chat about his promotion, current project, and reflect on his last four years with the Newpol Team!

"Yianni has established himself as an emerging leader within Newpol..."

Congratulations on your promotion! What are you enjoying most about your new role?

As Project Manager, I am now a lot more involved in the project’s day-to-day operations, which brings a whole new sense of accountability and pride in how the project is progressing. Each day presents new challenges, and I am enjoying the increased engagement with our clients and subcontractors, working collaboratively to find new ways to overcome these obstacles.

What has been your favourite project to date?

Strathmore Secondary College, my first project with Newpol, was definitely a highlight. From start to finish, the project progressed smoothly. We worked with a great group of subcontractors and delivered a high-quality project ahead of program, which resulted in a very happy client!

I also have a huge appreciation for both stages of Kilvington Grammar, simply because both stages have played a crucial part in my personal development. Due to the timing of COVID-19, Stage 1 presented its challenges. Having said that, we were able to deliver a high-end product, which is high-tech and a real state-of-the art facility.

Stage 2, being my first project as a Project Manager, has presented its own set of challenges. However, I am grateful for the learnings I’ve gained so far.

Can you tell us about Kilvington Grammar School - Stage 2?

Kilvington Grammar Stage 2 has changed quite significantly since Newpol were awarded the project. Initially the works to the existing Middle School Building (Stage 2) was a minor refurbishment/fit out, however after significant structural investigations completed during Stage 1, the project scope changed substantially.

The revised scope now includes the demolition of the roof and roof structure, the entire ground & level 1 floor structures, the entire front façade and a complete strip out internally. The majority of the original double brick walls of the building were to remain, which required extensive propping and design coordination to allow demolition to take place and installation of new structure around the temporary propping system.

The demolition and structure works on the project were particularly complex, as there were over 15 diagonal ‘Shore 400’ props holding up the walls, which ultimately made the demolition of walls and installation of new steel members very intricate.

We have now installed new structural footings, to take load of the new steel structure. A new roof, new front facade, all new classroom layouts, and complete new services throughout will also be installed. This includes 12 general learning areas, and two science rooms that will directly link to the science wing of the brand-new Science and Technology Centre that we delivered in Stage 1.

What is your favourite thing about the construction industry?

It would have to be watching a project evolve from nothing to a completed build that positively services a community.

That said, you have to appreciate the construction process itself and the satisfaction you feel each time you achieve a new milestone in the project lifecycle."

What drew you towards the construction industry?

My family history in carpentry. I grew up learning from, and helping my father, and initially began a pre-apprenticeship with the intention to become a carpenter. However, I realised early on that I wanted to be involved in the entire construction process, so I transitioned to a Construction Management course.

What is the best advice you have received?

There isn’t a single piece of advice that stands out above the rest. Instead, I find myself regularly reflecting on the various insights shared by my mentors over the past seven years.

The individuals I admire most have consistently emphasised the importance of accountability and transparency. They have also encouraged embracing challenging conversations, as avoiding these discussions only delays the inevitable.

What advice would you give those interested in a career in construction, and or, with aspirations to progress in the industry?

The construction industry can be rewarding and demanding at the same time. So, don't be afraid to make mistakes or ask for help. No matter where you are in your career, this is where you learn and grow.

Also, show up with integrity and always be respectful. You will earn respect in return, which is essential for establishing and strengthening working relationships with your subcontractors, clients, consultants, and team.

You have been with Newpol for four years now, what do you enjoy most about working with our team?

The positive working environment and culture are set from above, with Alastair and Lukas’ approach to leading the team.

At Newpol, our leaders approach us with genuine care and respect. This has been the case since I first joined the team and has not diminished as the company continues to grow.

This attitude is evident throughout the organisation. We have a very approachable, collaborative, and energetic team, where we support and lean on one another.

What initially drew you towards joining the Newpol Team?

When I first met with Newpol’s leaders, they were still establishing the company in the industry, so I did not know much about them. However, from my first interaction with Alastair, Lukas, and Dieter, there was an energy about them and their approach; I could see the potential and wanted to be a part of it.

It didn’t take long to realise that my gut instinct was right! It has been a pleasure to be part of the organisation’s growth and to continue proving our capabilities as a Tier 3 Builder.

What has been a highlight of your career to date?

From a project perspective, the handover of RAM Kingswim in Manor Lakes stands out. We had a very tight program, which many questioned as achievable. However, not only did we finish on time, but our client was also extremely happy with the high quality delivered.

Personally, my promotion from Contract Administrator to Project Manager would undoubtedly be the highlight.

What do you hope for the future of the industry?

Greater efficiency and sustainability, specifically a continual reduction of building waste to landfill sites and improved recycling practices.

Additionally, since I joined the industry, many new technologies have been developed to improve the efficiency of administration-based roles and tasks. However, it would be beneficial to see a greater emphasis on enhancing onsite efficiencies, especially in the Tier 3 Sector.

What are you most looking forward to in the years to come?

I look forward to evolving alongside the Newpol team and gaining more confidence and experience as a Project Manager as my project portfolio continues to grow!
